This does indeed look staged. A rather clumsy reinactment, probably filmed some time after the fact. Men stand around "having their pictures taken"--by a movie camera. Nevertheless, the film provides an interesting and valuable glimpse at mining practices of a hundred years ago. The rebreather equipment resembles space suits. There's also a pulmotor demonstration. Why do the men keep those masks on once they're clear of the mine? Probably so we can get a good look. I wonder at the meaning of the shot of long strips of paper on a wall? Three stars for mainly historical interest.

Interesting and curious film made about this disaster, I don't know anything about this, so most of this is a guess. We start out by looking at graves. Did they bury them right next to the mine?!?! After that, it beats me what we're looking at.. If we're looking at actual rescue work, they're the most calm and jovial bunch of rescuers I've ever seen. I mean, where's the bedlam? the urgency? Actually, the whole thing looks staged(the rescue on film, not, you know the disaster itself) the "bodies" they dig up are moving when they're placed on the table! Tsk.
